2010 appears to have been a hard year for many poker players. The economic slump has caused havoc in many players lives, while others found with bigger and bigger poker schedules, their personal lives were affected. Some players had health issues and their share of personal crisis too. Some poker players though cruised through 2010 merrily! With all this said, I knew it would be an interesting year for poker players when it came to making new year resolutions. I decided to start hunting for them a few days before New Years Eve and continued to now, simply so I could see what the trend was for the poker community when it came their plans, resolutions and hopes and dreams. I giggled as I collected New Years Resolution after New Years Resolution. One of the resolutions that I will never forget reading made me spit my drink all over the place with laughter! “My New Years Resolution is to Start Smoking Crack!” I started thinking after reading this resolution that some players wouldn't be serious about their resolutions when posting on forums. The next few resolutions were also funny. “No more women!" “To have a hangover next year, I am very confident I can do that!” . . . and so on. I have never been one for keeping New Year Resolutions so I didn’t make a traditional one. My resolution; however, was “not to make a resolution”, and I found that I wasn't alone. I scoured facebook and twitter and checked around and around to find that many poker players were thinking right along the same lines. After a check and a count of the data I had collected “not making a new years resolution or rather a resolution that “goes in one year and out the other” was at the top of the list along with, of course, weight loss.
In the general population weight loss is always a big New Year Resolution. So, it's not surprising this would be big amongst poker players also. Many poker players travel, eat out for most of all of their meails, sit for long hours playing day after day and start to pack on the pounds. During 2010, there were million dollar bets on weight loss between Mike Matusow and Ted Forrest. I am guessing these guys would be trending the same way resolution wise. Making a resolution to yourself is a much cheaper way to push yourself to lose weight if you are dedicated to your plans. With the top two resolutions determined, I looked at my data set to find that in 2011 we are certainly going to have a more loving poker community! Peace, love, happiness and health were many player choices for 2011. Being more loving and caring to family and friends, being honest and true to the people around you, and to use the power of positive thinking to balance poker and life. All great resolutions that will add enrichment to your day to day living. In 2010, I witnessed many relationship breakdowns, family troubles, and again, I had health battles and accidents as I spied on everyone as part of my poker media job. I guess that these resolutions made by many individuals go hand in hand with the trying personal times they experienced last year. Even pro players such as Phil Laak found themselves in hospital, lucky to be alive! A few other big guns experienced relationship breakdowns and same can be true of the smaller stake players. Many poker players globally have taken a serious poker approach to their new year and making resolutions. The biggest trend when it came to making resolutions directly about poker was to cash in the World Series. It is evident that players have realised that there is only one winner in WSOP main event and only 9 finalists. With this said and done, cashing is the new wish! Its certainly a resolution that players can solidly make and if they are not bad beat, and put their energy, skills and mind to it and just do it! Other poker resolutions include taking a more serious and professional approach to the game and pushing to be more like the biggest and best players or rather “following in the footsteps of the greats”. Most of these serious poker resolutions revolve around live poker with some players choosing to give online poker a smaller part of their bankroll for 2011. Other resolutions revolve purely around online play with plans to increase percentages online and be more structured. Many of the newbies to the game simply want to increase their poker skills. Now that I think about it, that’s always a great resolution for all of us who play poker. Regardless of your New Year Resolutions, Woman Poker Player Magazine staff wish you the very best in 2011 in life, poker, and with the resolutions you have in your heart. Happy New Year to everyone!
