The World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) is PokerStars biggest online poker series. It takes place each September and offers 62 events and $30,000,000 in guaranteed prize pools. I only wish the ‘W’ of WCOOP might stand for "Women of the World." Unfortunately, I suspect there are fewer women playing WCOOP's high stakes tourneys and 2-day events than any other multi-table tourneys. All the research suggests that women play for lower stakes, are less motivated by prize money, and don't have as much time to play long hours at the tables.
So give a well deserved credit to PokerStars for coming up with a promotion to give women a boost to enter the WCOOP, and a chance to claim some of those shiny Championship bracelets. Pokerstars Women are adding Step Ticket prizes to all Women's Poker League and Women's Sunday final tables throughout August, effectively turning all their women's tournaments into WCOOP satellites. On top of that PokerStars are acknowledging the best woman of WCOOP with a Woman of the Series prize, rewarding the highest placed leader board woman with a trip to the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) in the Bahamas in January. What is there for a woman not to like? It makes me dream of a WCOOP Women’s fairytale . . .
Imagine a woman, lets call her Betty, she’s a stay at home mom who hasn’t been playing poker very long. She made the minimum deposit only and she plays micro-stakes because she’s more interested in keeping score at improving her game than trying to win some big cashout. She’s a regular in the Women's Poker League small buy-in games. She plays them because she lacks confidence in her poker skills to play for more stakes, and because she enjoys the camaraderie of playing with other women. At a final table of a Women’s Poker League $0.10 tourney Betty wins herself a few dollars, and a Step 1 WCOOP Satellite Ticket. She tries the Steps system, spins her ticket up into a bigger game, but then busts with Aces - Sorry, poker is poker, even in fairy tales!
This is where we go full blast Hollywood Movie - it’s all or nothing in this big game! - this is the night the baby finally sleeps the whole night - the moment her boyfriend acknowledges that poker is a skill game and supports her; and, we may even throw in a medical emergency involving her mother and a need to find some big cash fast. This is the time that Betty realizes she needs to bring all her knowledge of poker and experience to the table and play the best she can. It’s high drama at the poker table. Betty is playing the WCOOP Main Event with a guaranteed $5 million prize pool, and she’s doing great . The cards are on her side, she discovers the skills she used in the Women’s Poker League are working out for her here too. She plays her very best, and she wins! Betty becomes every women’s hero. She tops the WCOOP leader board and claims her PCA prize package. The press loves her story, and the news of Betty’s success inspires women everywhere! By the time Betty flies to Paradise Island to play the PCA, women regularly out-number men at the poker tables. The PCA main event start time is delayed due to the unexpected need to provision ladies rest rooms.
When Betty's mother gets out of hospital she asks Betty to teach her Hold’em . . . OK, maybe I am getting a little carried away with my poker women’s fairy tale, but just the same, a huge thank you to PokerStars for giving a girl a dream . . . and for trying to boost more women into the big games!
